Khipu Notes
Ascher Databook Notes:
- The khipu is attached to a carved piece of wood. The wood has 8 holes through which the khipu is threaded. Figure 1 shows the way in which the khipu is attached. Figure 2 shows details of the carving.
- This is one of several khipus acquired by the Museum in 1899 with provenance Marquez. This group includes KH00116, KH00117, KH0138, KH00142, and KH00143. For acomparison of them, see KH00116.
- On the portion of the khipu threaded through the wood:
- Each group contains 5 or 6 pendants. In all groups, the first pendant and the last 3 pendants are W and, with the exception of the last group, the second pendant is DB.
- In all groups, the value on the first pendant is the largest.
- Both the khipu threaded through the wood and the khipu appended to it (labeled Detail 1) are made of the same color cords: W, DB, and YG.
